Jon Rash:

Antarctica - a Window into Space

Antenna Array

Synopsis: Why go to Antarctica to study space? The answer lies in the Earth’s magnetic field. This talk starts with the history of finding the South Magnetic Pole. It then looks at some of the science carried out at the South African Antarctic base Sanae, and the role of the magnetic field. Observations range from ‘whistlers’ in the 1970s, through video imaging of the aurora australis, to active experiments with an upper atmosphere radar, part of a global-scale international network.

Jon Rash

Jon Rash spent a year at Sanae as an upper atmosphere scientist. He was involved in Space Physics research throughout his many years as lecturer, later Associate Professor, at the University of Natal, later UKZN. For the past two years he has been a part-time researcher for the SA National Space Agency.

21 May: Elwyn Jenkins - Changing Place Names in South Africa
23 July: Yvonne Spain - The Time of My Life
