In addition to bi-monthly General Meetings, with a plenary speaker, U3A Howick offers so much more! There is a wide range of topics and activities in Interest Groups whose membership is open to all U3A Members. Small Interest Groups meet in private homes or suitable venues as arranged by a Convener. Since it is assumed that most members are retired or semi-retired, most of these courses and group activities are held on weekdays during the day. The membership application form includes a list of currently active Interest Groups where prospective members are asked to indicate which groups they will participate in. There is also space to suggest new groups – topics you could teach, or groups you could convene. This helps the Committee to set up groups or schedule courses or talks which will be of interest to members.
The functioning of all Interest Groups depends on members’ participation and willingness to contribute. This includes taking on the role of Convener. The principle of U3A is peer group learning - members learns from each other. So a Convener is not expected to "present" every session, rather she or he can arrange for other members of the group to present individual sessions.
A list of the currently active Interest Groups is provided in the PDF document (for viewing or download), accessed by clicking on the link below. Some groups, in particular Book Club and Creative Writing, are best kept as small discussion groups, often in members' homes. However, more members are interested in these topics than can be accommodated in one such group. In these cases, "Group 1" is full and "Group 2" has been formed, which new members can join. Please contact the listed Group Convener using the contact details provided, if you want to join a particular group, or find out about details of their meetings. Most, but not all, Interest Groups have a WhatsApp group to keep members informed of details of meetings. Sometimes a group with a significant number of interested members may be without a Convener, and we look to members to step up.
